Misalignment is detrimental to the golf swing. Most golfers are actually aiming to the right of the target and don't realize it. In other words their stance while addressing the ball is actually pointing to the right of the target line. This is very noticeable if you were to lay a golf club across the front of their feet from toe to toe. But you see they're actually looking at the flag when they make their swing.
This amounts to high handicap players poor swings actually sending the ball down the intended target line while a well executed swing will send the ball right of the intended target line very likely into trouble. If they're lucky their ball ends up in the right rough, or worse in trees or perhaps water. Talk about playing games with your head! They don't realize their good shots are the result of poor swings and their bad shots are actually the result of a near perfect swing. Since they are unaware of their alignment flaw, they will never correct it and never reach their full golfing potential.
Hey, your swing flaws may be the result of poor alignment while addressing the ball. You need to check your alignment; it's that simple. While on the practice range, pick out a target, place a ball down and position yourself to strike the ball. Now lay your club down across the front of your toes, then step back. Line yourself up about 10 feet behind the club and ball and looking down the line created by the club notice where the club is pointing in relation to the target you picked out. Correctly aligned the club should point to an area parallel and left of the target. Therefore, it goes without saying that a club pointed to the right of the target is not aligned properly.
Should you determine you're misaligned, and you probably are, now you've got a basis to work from. Now it's time to learn how to square everything up for proper alignment on every shot. This will take some observation and practice. Now approach the club on the ground that is showing your misalignment and line it up properly, parallel and just to the left of the target. You may have to go back behind the club and ball to verify the club alignment is correct. Put your toes up next to the club and square your body up with the club. Now pick up the club and make a note of how it feels and looks to be aligned properly.
Okay, it's time to hit the ball. Your ball should head effortlessly down the target line. If not, again check your alignment. If it's good, just make sure you're swinging the club the way you've been taught and don't try to force it. Knowing you've got the alignment down can give you great confidence for hitting your shot. So practice this alignment technique on the practice range and make your alignment setup part of your routine on the golf course, minus the club on the ground of course, no pun intended.
