Five Ways to Hit the Golf Ball Lower

Here are five ways to hit the ball lower.
1. Ball Position
Regardless of what club you're using to hit a lower shot you need to place the ball further back in your stance. Even with a driver you can move the ball further back. To hit a low drive I would suggest placing the ball just forward of center, and make a shorter swing. The ball will launch flat, low and with very little back spin.
If you hit the ball too high in your normal swing, I would suggest checking your setup out in the mirror to see where the ball is. I often struggle with hitting the golf ball too high, when I check in the mirror, the golf ball position has usually crept forward. Different have people have different tendencies, some golfers find the ball moves too far back in there stance. It's good to be aware of your setup position over every shot and from round to round.
2. Club Fitting
You can get custom fit for equipment that will help you to hit the ball lower. In my opinion the way to go about this is to book a custom fitting session. The shaft and overall weight of the golf club is going to have the biggest impact on trajectory. When a shaft is stiffer in the tip and the weight is heavier, the ball will launch lower and fly lower. An expert club fitter will be able to build a club that flights the ball on your ideal trajectory.
3. Impact Position
To hit the ball on a low penetrating ball flight, you need to impact the golf ball with your hands ahead of the golf ball. This way the loft of the club face through impact is much less, starting the golf ball off lower. To get this feeling through impact it is often useful to practice hitting punch shots. If it feels like the ball 'pops-up' off your club face, or the ball is just launching way to high. Then chances are your wrists are flicking at the ball instead of covering the golf ball and compressing it into the ground.
4. Short Finish
When you make a short finish instead of a full finish, the ball will take off lower and stay lower. If you can really exaggerate the feeling of keeping your hands low to the ground on the follow through, this should help promote a bit of a draw as well. A draw helps the ball to move through the wind better, there's less resistance on the dimples!
5. Body weight shift.
When you shift your body weight to the left (right-handed golfer) on the downswing, and finish with 100% of your weight on your left foot, you will launch the ball lower. All you need to do is focus on making a nice full turn and then slowly shift all your power across to the left side of your body. As long as you don't feel as if you're hanging back on the golf ball after you've hit the ball. Good weight shift is essential for power, accuracy and hitting the golf ball low and penetrating.
