Tips For a Perfect and Consistent Golf Swing Plane

The golf swing plane is an important part of the golf swing and knowing a few important tips will really help you out. Having a golf swing that is on plane will primarily do two things. One, you'll definitely hit the golf ball straighter with a swing that is on plane. And two, you'll increase your distance as well. The swing plane affects your golf swing path and getting these two things right will help the rest of the swing.
Many golf instructors talk about and teach the swing plane. However, not all golf instructors make it easy to achieve a correct swing plane. I find a lot of golf teachers focusing too much on the intricate details of the golf swing plane and as a result, golfers become frustrated and overwhelmed. When you learn a simple system that contains correct and easy ways to have a better plane in your backswing and your downswing, you'll be hitting better golf shots and improving your consistency.
Let's first start with your backswing. It's important to start your swing out on a good plane because this will increase your chances of the rest of it being on plane as well. As you take your club back to the point where the club is parallel with the ground, your club head should be right in line with your hands and in a directly line with your target. This is important to get correct. If your club is pointing to the left or right and not straight or parallel with your target line, you are off plane.
Once you've gotten your takeaway on the right swing plane, the next step is easy. At the top of your golf swing your club should be right over your right shoulders. Simply swing and turn to the top and make sure you are over your shoulder and not over your arm (too flat) or over your neck or head (too steep).
Here is a simple drill you can do to check your position at the top of the swing. Simply take a backswing and stop at the top. Then, loosen your grip and allow the club to fall directly on you. Notice where the club is on your body. You want the club to touch the tip of your right shoulder. (for the right handed golfer, a lefty would do the opposite) If the club is too much over your arm you are too flat. If you are too steep, the club will hit your neck or head when doing this drill.
Once you've got your backswing on plane, your downswing will tend to stay on plane correctly as well. Another quick key you can be aware of is to make sure your hands are set in the middle of your chest halfway into your backswing. Halfway through your follow through, your hands should also be right in line with the middle of your chest or torso as well. The backswing and follow through mirror each other. When your hands are out of position, you club most likely will be out of position as well. Get these swing plane keys down and you will be hitting straighter and longer golf shots with more consistency.
