Footwork is commonly forgotten when trying to learn golf. The feet are usually overlooked because other sports tend to use footwork so much more so while golf is a game where you stand in one place. Since the feet provide the base for your swing, it is also an important avenue for you to start working on it.
Don't under-estimate how important alignment is in golf. Your feet have to run parallel to your target line but there is one little caveat here, after you line up your feet, you need to open you left foot just a little bit. This stance makes it easier to transfer the weight on the downswing and enables you to get through the ball easier. But it is still important to line up first and then to open your toe a little bit.
The main role of the feet is to keep yourself balanced and stable as you begin your swing. You should also be able to transfer your weight to your back foot to your front in order to generate power and clean contact.
You need to have your feet about shoulder width apart for you to maintain balance. Your weight should have a 50/50 balance on your feet during your setup. It is imperative that you stand on the balls of your feet and you should not sit on your heels or get up on your toes.
As you start your backswing a moderate amount of transfer occurs so that around 70% of your weight is on the back foot and 30% is on the front. You have to be sure that you don't roll your back foot at all. You should also keep your steady towards the inside of your foot like you are getting ready to push off towards the target.
The more seasoned golfers would bring their front heel off the ground during the backswing. If you want to maintain stability on your swing, you should keep your weight on the balls of your feet. If you have been swinging a certain way where you bring your heel up, it's not a very big problem. But if you are a beginner, you should work on keeping that heel planted.
Your weight should start to transfer with your back foot driving towards your target as you start your downswing. It will be easier for you to complete a turn and face the target if you have your front foot slightly open. As you follow through on your swing, your weight should almost be entirely on your front foot with your back heel up in the air and only your toes on the ground.
