Introduction
The past two decades, Ping have been known for their quality golf clubs. The Ping G series have been known for its great feel and the new Ping G20 is no exception. Ping claims that this new driver can be used by any and all golfers, from the beginners to the professionals. Its look is similar to all the other G series drivers, but its main difference is its technical improvements to help the average golfer to hit the ball higher and farther. The driver has an external weight that helps you launch the ball and it can be switched out once you get fitted for your clubs.
Overview
On the surface, the G20 is 2 grams heavier than the G15, but it actually feels lighter when you swing the it. This is mainly due to the balance point being located to a different place in the shaft. Because it feels lighter, one would be inclined to assume that you would be able to generate more clubhead speed. But actually it generates about the same speed as before. Its sweet spot is larger so it will help golfers drive the ball better when hitting the ball outside the sweet spot. There is a tendency for you to pull the driver though, so align yourself properly.
The Good
One of the distinct advantages of this driver is that you can align the club head easier. The align mark is directly visible from the club and when looking down on the club it is easily noticeable. The feel you will get when making contact with the ball entirely different and much better than its previous counterparts. Its balance is better than any of Ping has produced before. The balance is different because it feels lighter somehow. The MSRP is only $329, so you don't have to break the bank if you want to buy the new Ping G20.
The Bad
The Ping G20's downside is that it only comes with two stock shafts. But even that doesn't make a difference since they are the same two shafts the other Ping drivers come within the G series. If what you prefer from your club are more shaft choices then this driver is not for you. You also cannot get a lot of feedback from the club when you mishit the ball. It is also hard to feel where the club head is in your back swing, so the only way to correct your position is by videotaping yourself during your swing.
Bottom Line
The Ping G20 is the better driver than the previously manufactured Ping drivers with its feel, launch angle and low spin. This driver is for you if you are a beginning or a medium-handicap golfer. But if you want more feel for your driver, then this driver is not for you. This will improve the driving accuracy and distance of the average golfer, but it might not help much for the experienced golfer. Although the Ping G20 is definitely an improvement over the other Ping drivers, its improvement is not really that huge. This driver is not that special compared to the G10 or the G15, so if you already have these drivers then it is highly advisable that you stay away from this driver.
