Great golf swing instruction is necessary if you want to play your best golf on a regular basis. The problem of poor golf is usually from a lack of good instruction rather than from a lack of talent. It's not that difficult to make solid contact with the golf ball and I really believe beginners golfers who are taught the right way can learn golf a lot faster and enjoy it more.
My golf instruction teaching method is basically composed of checkpoints I use when teaching a new student for the first time or teaching more advanced students as well. There may be more technical talk as I teach a golfer who already has a decent game, but I never lose sight of the fundamentals no matter how good the golfer is. Even the pros are constantly monitoring their fundamentals with their swing coaches on a daily basis. Weekend and amateur golfers don't have all day to practice their golf swings which is all the more reason to learn the swing the right way so you can save time, money, and effort.
When teaching a beginner or reviewing a more experienced player's game, I always start by checking their grip and setup before going to their swing mechanics. There are drills that can help a golfer get their setup correct more easily and it also becomes a positive habit as you make sure you are setting up correctly in your swing. Once this is accomplished, the golfer can then swing with better, more improved balance and will allow themselves to have better contact and straighter golf shots.
The main checkpoints I go over in the golf swing are proper swing sequence, which includes coiling and winding up correctly to generate more potential power for the downswing and impact. I also like to see golfers stay level in their golf swings and not have too much excess body movements. A proper weight shift is a big key for power and also eliminating excess movement. Not shifting your weight enough will result in a lack of power. Shifting too much can lead to excess movement and will make it difficult to recover from in the downswing.
The swing plane or path is important and I also teach basic checkpoints for these important keys of the golf swing. It's helpful to check your swing just after your takeaway, at the halfway back point, and at the top of the golf swing to make sure they are correct. The downswing should be a motion where the body stays stable and the arms can swing down so that everything can come through impact together. In the first part of the follow through you want to swing your club towards your target and then continue until you have swung it over your left or front shoulder and are facing your target while maintaining good balance.
These are some of the basic golf swing tips and keys I teach my students in golf lessons. You can review and practice these same fundamentals and start playing better golf right away. Great luck with your game.
