Sometimes amateur golfers have issues in their golf setup or their golf swings and they don't even know what exactly they are doing wrong. This is the biggest reason why golfers don't get better and play the way they want to. The first step to better golf is understanding your golf swing so you can fix it and get on the right track. Here I will cover some common golf setup errors that will help you understand and see if this might be an issue for you. If so, I can then give you the necessary steps to work on overcoming and eliminating the setup flaws so you can make better golf swings.
Your golf setup is your biggest fundamental key to successful golf. Get your setup right, and you can stop trying so hard in your golf swing. When a golfer has a good setup, the golf club naturally and almost automatically wants to swing on the correct swing path. I see so many golfers get frustrated and they don't even realize that their setup is at least half, if not more, of their problem.
The first most common error in the setup among amateur golfers is a weak grip that is held incorrectly in the palms of the hands. You have to hold your golf club in your fingers in order to create the necessary club head speed to make the ball fly far and straight. Golfers who grip the club in the palms may not even know they are doing it. A great way to check if you're holding the club correctly is to take your grip and setup and then look down at your hands. You should see two knuckles of your left hand (for the right handed golfer). This means your hand is actually turn slightly on an angle and is more on top of the club handle versus behind underneath. The left heel pad of your hand should sit directly on top of the grip. You also want your thumbs on top and slightly pointing down in the same direction towards the left as you are looking down.
Poor posture is another common error golfers make and this can really be costly. I like to tell my students to have sharp angles which are created from their hip and knee bend. You want to bend your knees so they cover up your shoe laces. This should get your weight into the balls of your feet more and will also help keep you more balanced. Make sure you have enough bend from your hips so that you are over your feet and there is a nice angle between your thighs and your torso. Your back should be fairly straight, it's just the hip bend makes your spine tilt forward as you move into good golf posture.
Lastly, your golf alignment needs to be correct if you are serious about hitting better golf shots that land closer to the hole. You can easily fix your alignment by doing a couple of simple drills on the practice range. The first thing to do is to take a club and lay it down on the ground in between your feet and the golf ball and facing parallel with the line of your target. You can simply hit balls this way and before you know it, you will be automatically lining up correctly on the golf course. Your mind gets used to aligning properly and will help put you in the proper alignment just from practicing this way on the driving range.
When you are aligned properly on the golf course, great things can happen. Your golf club will naturally tend to swing on a good swing plane and swing path. This will help you hit more consistent, straighter golf shots and you'll also gain added distance in the process.
