There are a million golf articles out there by a million writers but, if you read them, it's just like any other service industry. There's good, bad and terrible information out there. That being said, they're all just trying to help you play better golf and that's exactly what we're going to do for you right now.
You don't actually have to practice your golf swing all the time if you just want to maintain it. Believe it or not, your golf skills will hang in there once they've been instilled if you practice only one time a week. Basic muscle memory stays if you use it just once weekly for upwards of 5-6 months. Ever noticed that you can join a volleyball league and play once a week and perform at pretty much the same level for a very long time? This is because your muscles can easily keep tone at just once a week. Things go south as soon as you start breaking the 8-9 day barrier though so, if you split for a vacation during volleyball league, expect a little time to get back up to speed upon your return.
Once you've reached a base level of skill at a sport outside of the extremely elite level, you'll probably notice there's a little variation in your performance but for the most part, you hit an array of similar shots even if you only play or just go to the range once a week. There are a few ways to optimize your practices so you can still refine things and improve even at this minimal amount of training.
The first step to improving with just one practice a week is to pick three fundamental skills in your golf swing and practice them for the season. That's right, the season. If you want to get some new muscle memory and improve your golf swing, you're going to need to practice the new skill for at least 5-6 weeks or more. If you're at a pace of playing or hitting the range 1-2 times a week, adding in three fundamental skills for the season will be more than enough to keep you busy. Picking a few basic skills to work on will also clear your head of all the little finicky stuff that can't really help you improve your golf swing anyway and keep you focused on techniques that will really lower your scores. Now you might be asking yourself right now: Do I practice all three fundamental skills every time I play? The answer is no. You pick them in sequential order from your feet first and work your way up the body.
Lower body golf swing fundamentals are far more important that upper body ones. If you need to work on your back leg staying still, work on it for 5-6 weeks until it improves and it'll be integrated into your golf swing enough for you to leave it alone while you go to work on something further up the body like your back angle. 5-6 weeks on back angle should be enough to put you four months into the season and from there, you can pick your final fundamental skill for the remainder of the season.
If you're playing more often than the frequency discussed in this article, you'll find things improve a bit quicker but keep in mind that the format would stay the same i.e. you would harness one skill and then move on to the next and on occasion check to make sure previous skills are maintaining while you work on new ones during the odd review session which, should take place midway through the learning of each subsequent skill.
Learning how to practice your golf swing effectively is a great starting point to begin really enjoying this great game. That being said, it's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to really shaving strokes off your game.
