Golf clubs are often purchased as a vanity thing. The thinking may go something like this... If I have the latest and greatest driver or irons, my game is sure to improve.
This sounds good and for those with deep pockets is easily justified. The problem is that the thinking is flawed. Golf clubs can make or break your game. If you have the wrong clubs in your bag, it doesn't matter how good they are, your game will suffer.
Some golfers believe that having one of the latest drivers in their bag is going to add 20 or 30 yards to their tee shots. In some cases this may be true, but for the average golfer this will not be the case.
Evaluate Your Golf Swing
Reality is, if you have the wrong set of clubs in your bag, your game will suffer and your enjoyment of the game will follow. There are so many choices with golf clubs these days; it is hard to know what is best for you.
My recommendation is to get with a local club maker or golf instructor and have them evaluate your golf swing. Determine what your optimum golf swing speed is first. Then they can help you decide which golf club shaft is best for you. This will go a long way to ensuring you put the right set of golf clubs in your hand.
Hybrids
Another thing to consider is whether you should give up on those long irons and switch to hybrids. This was a decision that I put off for a number of years. I had an image in my head that I should be able to play a 3 or 4 iron with ease. When I decided to give a hybrid a try, make game improved almost overnight. I put my 3 and 4 iron in the garage and added a couple of hybrids to my bag.
Man oh man, what a difference it has made. Now, when I am faced with the long second shot, I pull out one of my hybrids and confidently let it rip.
Matching Golf Clubs
When I first started playing golf, the mindset was that you should play a matched set, but that idea should be thrown out the window. I now carry clubs from 4 different manufacturers. I found that I love the drivers I use, but I never got comfortable with the irons. I have different hybrid golf clubs, than my irons and I also have different wedges.
The bottom line is, don't let the wrong golf clubs ruin your game. Take time to evaluate how your swing work with your clubs and make adjustments to compliment your natural golf swing. You will find that your scores will improve and so will your enjoyment of the game.
