Hybrids have been in our game of golf for more than 10 years now and what really amazes me is that many amateur golfers are still trying to play golf with 3 and 4 irons instead of a hybrid replacement. That's just nuts.
I quite often get told by these non-hybrid golfers that they really like their long irons and hit them well. I don't bother arguing. Instead I ask them to humor me and do a hit test, 10 shots with their long iron and then 10 with the hybrid replacement. The hybrid always wins. It is more forgiving, accurate, gets the ball landing softer on the greens and is far easier to play from tricky lies.
If you are the same as most of us golfers, you would like to be more consistent, day in and day out. You want more consistent shots and lower scores right? Hybrids are there for just that purpose and you may want to seriously consider replacing your irons all the way down to the 5. Having 3, 4 & 5 hybrids and starting the irons out with the 6 would improve the games of the vast majority of golfers. Better players may want to hang onto their 5 iron but it's really debatable in hit tests! Even the best golfers in the world - on tour - are carrying hybrids more and more.
One of the common mistakes I see with players who have embraced these great additions to our bags is that the ball is played too far forward in the stance. You're not trying to sweep the ball away like a wood, that's the wrong thought to have for hybrids. You should treat hybrids more like irons (that is what they are replacing after all) and hit down through the ball to get solid contact and strike. Even taking a small divot out, perhaps the thickness of a bacon slice is a good idea and shows you are descending through impact, just like a well struck iron.
I recommend playing the ball 3 inches inside the heel of your front foot. In fact I recommend this ball position for all normal shots as it keeps the ball position consistent, which makes the position you are squaring the club face to consistent, as well as stabilizing the loft separations between clubs. You have one swing for all clubs and do not have to alter your swing mechanics and weight shift to accommodate a moving ball position.
The hybrid is a great combination of a head which is big enough to get you out of bad lies a lot easier than a small iron head. It has a low center of gravity and a wide sole to help limit the damage on mis-hits, but is still small enough to feel you have some control if you want to shape the shot.
If you are serious about improving your ball striking and consistency, play better and lower your scores, then quite simply you must take a serious look at replacing all your long irons with hybrids.
