How should I hold the putter?
Your stroke is strongly affected by the way you hold the club. When putting, the two crucial points are: keep your hands together as a unit, and don't grip too tightly.
Keeping your hands together ensures that they work in unison without one dominating the other. A nice tip to follow to ensure you remember this is to make sure you can only see the top of one thumb (the one on hand gripping lower down the putter) when you make your grip. You should also let your arms hang loosely, with a light grip on the club, so your arms swing like a pendulum from your shoulders - this results in a much better touch when making a putt and provides a nice rhythm.
How can I improve my long putts?
Many people struggle with long putts and the longer the putt, the more difficult it becomes. One might think it's best to focus hard on the hole and target the shot, however, as the putt gets longer this can seem to have an opposite effect - it is possible to be too focused!
One method to get around the problem is to broaden your target. Take two tees and position one a couple of inches in front of the hole and the other about three feet behind the hole (both on the same side of the hole). This forms a triangle and you should intend for your golf balls to end up in this triangle after you putt.
The aim here isn't to make every putt but to train your eyes to see a bigger target and stop yourself focusing on only the hole. You can use this technique, putting from increasing distances, until you reliably end up in the triangle.
Improving your short putts
Once you've become more confident in your long putting you'll need to be able to reliably knock-in short putts otherwise you'll be finding yourself three-putting all too often.
Take five balls and place them in different positions around the hole, with the objective of this drill to make five putts in a row. You'll find it challenging at first, but after enough practice and repetition, you'll find yourself making such putts reliably, time-and-again. Once you start getting really good at this drill, move the position of the golf balls back by about a foot and try again! This style of repetitive practice is a key part of any golfers game.
