The Secret To Real Golf Consistency, And Why Most Golfers Will Never Achieve It

Almost without exception, golfers of all abilities from Pro to Amateur are searching for and would like MORE CONSISTENCY.
I'm going to make a bold statement, because I really see the evidence of this in virtually every golfer I meet. It may be a bit confusing but stay with me on this.
Most golfers build a huge degree of inconsistency into their golf and then expect consistency which is actually golf insanity.
Yes, most golfers build a lot of inconsistency into their game both knowingly and unknowingly. Everything they do from food and drink prior to and while playing, to the way they warm up, practice sessions, swing mechanics, even the way they think on and off the course. You name it and usually there is a high degree of inconsistency from one week to another. Think about it, if you want consistency to turn up on the golf course, then you have to be really consistent in all of your actions on and off the golf course don't you?
The path to true consistency is to be constant with everything on and off the course. Changing your swing several times, moving from one coach to another is not going to work. Find a coach that you get on with and like the sound of their philosophies. It's really important that you see eye to eye and have a good feeling about your coach. You also want a coach who really knows the importance of good fundamentals and being consistent with what you work on.
Modelling is the way to go. Between you and your coach, find a swing that you feel comfortable making. You should be able to achieve the swing without lots of straining unless you intend to get fitter, stronger and more flexible. If you are not working on your physical conditioning then there is no point trying to develop a swing which is outside your physical comfort zones is there? Once you have found and decided on a swing you want to groove, don't change, even if it is not a perfect swing. (If there is such a thing?) The most important thing is to be consistent with it. There's that word again. The only hope you have of developing a consistent golf swing on the golf course is to consistently make the same swing moves year after year.
It's certainly not just about the swing either. The way you prepare, what food and hydration you take and the way you think and control your thoughts for each swing are immensely important. If you are in a good frame of mind and play well, don't be surprised if you cannot repeat it the following weekend when you pitch up at the course late, hurried and perhaps upset from an argument with your other half. Yes, the mental game of golf needs to be adhered to properly or you will not get the results from your body.
You may not like Jim Furyk's swing but he has consistently worked on it his whole life, never changing. It has made him tens of millions of dollars, allowed him to live a fantastic lifestyle playing a game he loves. Jim Furyk possesses one of the PGA Tour's less orthodox swings which some would call downright ugly. Jim's father, Mike, has been his only swing instructor, how's that for consistency? He started putting cross-handed at age 7 and is a damn fine putter as you would have to be to win so many times on the PGA Tour. An unorthodox swing, consistently working it with the same coach (his dad) for years and years and what's the result? Over $50 million dollars in tour earnings alone! His sponsorship deals may well dwarf that.
The bottom line? Take a long hard look at every single aspect of your game and be seriously frank about your inconsistencies. Then make a list of the most obvious areas where you chop and change and add to this list as things surface over time. Pretty soon you will start to develop a clear picture of where you are consistent and where you are not. pick on one or two areas to get under control and repeating nicely.
Apart from finding areas where you are not consistent in your actions which are hurting your game, you will also find areas which you do consistently poorly. For example, not drinking enough water in a round of golf and eating chocolate bars instead of good energy foods. Consistently thinking about bad shots instead of what you would like to do. Just as it is important to get good routines in place it is just as important to get rid of the poor practices and replace them with good consistent actions, behaviours and thinking.
Consistent plans and actions both on and off the course will start to show up in more consistent, better scoring on the golf course.
