Sounds like a positive statement right? Well it all depends on how good the practice is and what you are actually practising. If the principles that you are practising are incorrect, practice will still make permanent. Practice does not guarantee improvement. You must ensure that what you are working on is absolutely correct. There is no point at all putting in 5+ hours of practice a week if you are doing the wrong thing. Pick the right time to practice. Use the winter golf season. Most local golf clubs freeze handicaps in the off season so you have a good few months to get your game in perfect shape for the new summer season. Remember to have regular fresheners with your local PGA professional to ensure that you are practising the right thing.
It is also vital that you do not try and practice too many things at once. Select a weakness and work on that. If you slice, identify what it is that causes the slice (9 times out of 10 it will be grip or swing path). Your local PGA teaching professional will be able to quickly point you in the right direction. Once they have you working on the right thing, go away and repeat. Getting these changes installed in your muscle memory is absolutely key. Remember one horrible thought - it will HAVE to get worse before it can get better. It doesn't matter how bad you think it is, it WILL get worse, it will feel unnatural and it will take time.
Check your equipment. You need to make sure you are using the right gear to enhance your current standard of play. You may have outgrown what you are currently using. It is amazing how much your game can improve by swapping out your equipment to something that is more suited to you. This can be right down to your golf clothing. Strange as that sounds, golf clothing today is classed more as equipment than apparel so check your wardrobe!
Let me make it clear, practice is a good idea. Don't be afraid of practice. The point here is to make sure that you are practicing the right things. Concentrate only on what needs improving. Where is your score falling down? Where can you pick up shots? Don't overlook simple alignment checks. Again, how you setup to the ball will have a huge bearing on what unfolds there after Practice makes permanent.
