The Ping i20 driver is brand new for 2012. It replaces the Ping
i15 and has had some considerable upgrades. The Ping i15 was a harsh
feeling driver with very little forgiveness. The Ping i20 driver has
totally wiped out all of the weaknesses that the i15 used to have.
It looks special, with a matte black finish that actually absorbs sunlight, there is now no distraction when addressing the golf ball. Apart from the sleek sexy look, it also gives the impression that the head is smaller than 460cc. It may look between 400-420cc in size. For many good players this is great, because the driver definitely doesn't look as big and cumbersome as it's complimentary model...the Ping G20.
The specs of the Ping i20. The club head comes in 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees of loft. The Ping i20 comes with Ping's stock TFC 707D shaft, but you can also get the Project X Black shaft as an alternative. The Project X shaft is designed to go lower and be slightly stiffer... but, it wasn't that noticeable when I tested the club. A better option may be to book yourself a Ping custom fitting! They will have higher quality shafts available to test on site.
Likenesses of the Ping i20. The Ping i20 is reminiscent of the old Ping Rapture. It has that low powerful ball flight that just keeps on going forward at the target without any ballooning. It definitely comes with more of a 'thwack' sound than a metallic ting!
How's the distance? After optimizing the right shaft and loft for my own golf swing. I managed to pick up 15 yards total distance on my drives. Notably, my current driver has been the Ping i15. There really has been a big change in this golf club. The Ping i20 is much more fun than the workman like Ping drivers of the past. This is probably down to the super aerodynamic head. The faster you swing the golf club, the more aerodynamics matter, so for all the long hitters out there this will help power boost your tee shots.
What are the pro's? Very functional, a lot of thought has been put into the design of this weapon. More distance to the stronger golfer. Feels very solid! A massive improvement to the Ping i15. Flies on a powerful low trajectory. Low spin, great for windy conditions. Dispersion is tight! The ball doesn't tend to move off-line as much as some other drivers do. Looks silky smooth and feels it too.
What are the con's? For players who struggle to get the ball airborne...this is most likely not the club for you. The stock shaft options aren't very high quality and they lack a good selection unlike some competitor models.
