Improve your chipping and you will improve your putting. How? Chipping well will place the ball closer to the hole. Statistically the closer you are to the hole, the more putts you make. Of course, the more putts you make the better your score. Golf chipping assessments identify parts of the chipping/pitching game which need improvement. Top PGA Professionals utilizes assessments in their teaching. They believe assessments motivate students to learn and allows them to take an active role in building their own skills.
Use this assessment to evaluate chipping skills and as a chipping drill to improve skills and motivate students. This Tour Standard assessments can be performed with or without your PGA golf instructor. Use the assessed results to motivate yourself and set achievable goals. Using it as a drill will improve your ability to get the ball close to the hole from just off the green. It will help you limit the number of putts you take each round and bring down your handicap.
This evaluation is part of the PGA Tour standard skills tests. These are the same evaluations that were developed by top PGA of America Professionals for their PGA Tour student players. PGA Tour players will use these evaluations up to once a month to pinpoint weak points in their games.
Make sure that when you complete this test the shots are hit from different 5, 10, and 15 yard locations with different slopes to different green undulations. Otherwise an inaccurate reading will be acquired. This best way to complete this is to alternate shots between the 5, 10 and 15 yard location and pins.
TOUR STANDARDS CHIPPING SKILLS TEST:
A. Chip from a position 3' to 5' off the green.
B. Hit five chip shots to each of the following targets
to a target 5 yards from the edge of the green.
to a target 10 yards from the edge of the green.
to a target 15 yards from the edge of the green.
C. Remove the two chips closest to each target hole and remove the two chips furthest from each target hole.
D. Measure the distance of each remaining ball from it's target hole. Record the distance of the remaining ball.
The 5 yd chip? _____
The 10 yd chip? _____
The 15 yd chip? _____
PGA TOUR STANDARD: Remaining ball 1.5' or less from the hole
Assessments improve achievement. Golf students utilizing assessments are more motivated to learn, can take an active role in building their skills, learn to self-evaluate and are better able to set realistic achievable goals.
