How to Choose a New Driver

The secret to choosing the correct driver is trying plenty and keeping an open mind.
However... You need to know clearly what it is you want out of your driver so that you end up with the correct driver for you. To get the optimum ball flight, carry distance and total length you need to make sure you have a head and shaft combo that is perfect for you.
The general rule is that if you have a slower swing speed (90-100mph) you need a softer tipped shaft, with a high loft head...say 10.5* or 12*. The reason you need this is because a slower swinging golfer cannot load the club as hard as a stronger golfer, the ball will not go as far, therefore a higher launch and spin rate is required.
On the other end of the spectrum, a golfer who has a high swing speed, (105-120mph+), would need a club head with between 7.5* to 9.5* combined with a shaft that has a very stiff tip to keep the ball spin at 2,500 and launch angle around 11*.
I myself have had driver woes for the last couple of years as I chopped and changed, but never found the correct driver. I have used loads of different heads and shafts, different lengths and grips to try and figure it out. However, I finally found the correct driver for my swing. I swing the club at around 120mph and have always used an extra stiff shaft... however what I didn't know was how much the tip stiffness varied on each shaft. I had been getting stronger from the gym and the shafts that I used to use had tips that were way too soft. Models like the Fubuki... which were great shafts but just launched the ball high with too much spin. I thought it was something wrong with my golf swing until I found a custom fitter who explained all this too me. He kitted me out with a very stiff tip shaft with a 9.5* loft head. From there I started to hit the golf ball like a frozen rope. It never moved off the line it started on... which of course left me a very happy golfer.
What I learnt was never go by the flex of the shaft or reviews from other people. Go and try these clubs and shafts for yourself until you find the correct driver for your golf swing.
The ideal flight either player wants is something very direct and flat. As soon as the ball starts climbing too much into the sky... distance and control are lost. You will gain great versatility with a driver that launches correctly. It will be great downwind, into wind and easier to use for different shapes of shot.
For better players it is important to have a driver that you can hit knock down shots with and turn both ways. Also, you will need a club that is fairly easy to hit when you are not playing your A game, or your swing is a little off.
