As Difficulty Increases So Does Tension

If you are a beginner or a player who has struggled with the game of golf, then chances are you have hit plenty of bad shots. With all the bad shots you've made playing golf, it may always pop up every time you need to hit a new one. Your conscious mind uses these past memories as an opportunity to create doubt and take control. When you allow the conscious mind to control your swing, you tighten up and lose the fluid natural movement that works best.
Your previous experiences have forced you to look at the game at a preconceived way. Your errors now let you see new shots as difficult to play. If you reverse this thinking however, and you look at your shots as easy, then you'll find that it relaxes your mind in difficult shots, which in turn reduces the desire for the conscious mind to control the swing.
Visualizing an Easy Task
The trick is to visualize an easy task before you hit your shot. Anything will do, even the simple way of picking the ball out of the hole can be the perfect vision to kick start your putt.
Picture yourself just picking up the ball and tossing it underhand towards the ball. This vision is so simplistic that the underhand motion would allow you to get the ball very close to the cup.
For longer shots, picture throwing the ball overhand. Imagine a tight fairway that is littered with heavy tree on both sides. You may think that you could hit the fairway less than 50% of the time with your driver. However if you were handed the ball, it's safe to assume that you could throw it in between the trees for 100% of the time. Do this visual exercise and you'll be able to swing better in no time.
A Closer Relationship
Now that you are slowly gaining your confidence, you can now apply your visualization to the shots that you are about to hit. With the visualization exercises in the corners of your mind, in time it'll be easier for you to hit your shots.
The same thing goes for your short game shots. You can play with different scenarios in your head until you find the right one you can use to make your short putts easier. An example of this is when you picture the moment of impact with a straight path and a square clubface, picturing the ball jump of the club at the right hand, and swiftly fall to the desired area you want it to land to and roll towards the cup.
Visualization works for full shots as well. Focus on the impact as the ball flies through a straight path with a square club face and lands directly to your desired plain, with very little movement right or left. You can then visualize it landing next to your target.
The easier you make your shot seem before you hit it, the less likely that your conscious mind will try to control the club. The more you let your subconscious control the swing, the more fluidity and relaxation you'll feel so that you will be able to hit better shots.
